Requirements

MINERVA is 100% Java and packaged for Unix and Windows, thus operational for a wide range of computing machines.

MINERVA developers need access to a MINERVA Develoment Server, either through a network or locally on their own machine.

The MINERVA Develoment Server usually requires a Java language processor, an http demon, and a Java-capable Internet browser.

Users who provide MINERVA based applications for their clients need a MINERVA Application Server running on their internet or intranet WWW server.

Clients executing MINERVA based applications do not require any special software or hardware beyond network connectivity and a Java-enabled environment, e.g. a PC or workstation with a Java-enabled internet browser like Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer.

Technical requirements for the use of MINERVA depend on the users' role in the data processing food chain:

  • Application Development - Programmer
    • A decent machine, e.g. 586/64MB
    • A modern operating system, e.g. Windows NT4.0
    • A Java language processor, e.g JDK1.4
    • A Java-enabled internet browser, e.g. Netscape 4.7
    • A HTTP demon, e.g. Peer Web server as part of NT4.0
    • 100MB of free hard disk space
    • a TCP/IP network
  • Application Deployment - Server Side User
    • A sufficient machine, e.g. 586/256MB
    • A modern operating system, e.g. Linux
    • A HTTP demon, e.g. Apache
    • 100MB of free hard disk space
    • a TCP/IP network
  • Application Use - Client Side User
    • A decent machine, e.g. 586/64MB
    • A modern operating system, e.g. Windows 98
    • A Java-enabled internet browser, e.g. Internet Explorer 5.0
    • a TCP/IP internet or intranet connection to the server

Note that MINERVA deployment does neither require CGI-BIN scripting nor server side processing other then the httpd demon. Thus, MINERVA based web hosted services can also be offered in very restricted web hosting environments.

Note also that server side MINERVA can be run as servlets, can be used for CGI-BIN scripting and can interface to a SQL RDBMS system using the JDBC access conventions.
